After a week of hearing constant talk about diets, the gym, burning off calories, fat, obese 'porkers' who eat fatty food and are therefore 'disgusting' (NOT my words), I am kinda desperate to DO something to fight this fat-phobic, thin-prejudiced, body-hating, diet-worshipping virus that is so prevalent in our culture. So does anyone have any suggestions about active things I can do to make a stand????

It makes me feel sick to hear people I otherwise like and respect talk about other human beings as gross and disgusting because of their body shape and eating habits. Partly because its like an exact replica of the voice of the ED... partly because I have friends and family who are overweight or obese and who are the kindest, cleverest, most loving, selfless and all round wonderful people I know- and so FAR from being disgusting in any way.

SO HURT AND ANGRY.

ps just posted this on facebook- a small action but it made me feel a bit better and more empowered:

I feel like something needs to be said, maybe every day until people realise that it is not ever ok to call other human beings 'gross' or 'disgusting'.

Being thin does not make you in any way superior or strong or accomplished.
Being fat does not make you inferior or disgusting or weak or greedy.
Eating healthy food doesn't make you a better person just like eating fatty food doesn't make you disgusting.
Being wealthy and/or middle class doesn't make you a better person, and being poor and/or working class doesn't mean you are lazy, stupid, or 'uncultured', or fat.

Things to consider before you judge someone based on their weight:

Research indicates that overweight and obese people have on average the same energy intake as normal weight or underweight people. We still don't know why some people get fat and others don't.
Fat is a vital organ without which we die.
People in the overweight BMI category live longest.
It is not being overweight that causes ill health, but lack of activity and unbalanced diets.

*end of rant*

Hey good to see you around, sorry it's on such angry terms.

So, what can you do?

You can correct people when they speak. I know it's hard to correct a magazine or a news report, but you can write letters to the editor. You can check out http://www.haescommunity.org/ and see what you can do locally.

Hey I totally agree with you on this. ..Facebook is a good start. There are loads of body campaigns on the net you could get involved with which work on getting the message over
