One of my good friends just shared this exercise with me, and I found it really helpful. It's super simple, all you need is three pieces of paper, a pen, and some tape or glue.

Step One: List 10 qualities that you like about yourself, and a short sentence explaining them. (And shut out the voice inside that instantly retorts, "But there are no good qualities!!!!!") It might take awhile, and that's fine. It took me awhile too.

Step Two: On the second piece of paper, list 10 qualities that you don't like about yourself.

Step Three: On the the third piece of paper, write out the answer to the question "Who do I want to be?" Or draw it, or whatever you think fits.

Step Four: Tape/ glue the three pieces so the piece with the qualities that you don't like about yourself is squished in between the other two pieces, which should be facing out so you can read them.

The point of this is to have something that you can come back to when you're feeling shitty or down or whatever it might be. You know that the "bad" stuff is there, but it's in the middle, so you can't see it, and you won't focus on it. Focus on the good stuff, and the vision of who you want to be as you work through recovery.

Dwelling on the negative never helped anyone.

This is excellent, thank you! It's so important to think about the positives :)

Cool idea!
Trying this exercise out just made me realize (once again) how much I focus on the negative...(After the boost I got from the first part, that is).
