It is an Australian ad for Nestle Diet Yoghurt.

I think its portraying an incorrect view of what a "calorie" is.

In the ad there are two women having a snack - one has a small cake/muffin snack, the other has Nestle Diet Yoghurt. Then a delivery guy comes up and says "I have a delivery of calories for you"... then there is some banter over where they are coming from and if 'Kate' (the woman eating the yoghurt) gets a delivery too, which of course she doesn't. Fair enough they are saying its a low-cal snack.

However.

She then asks; "Can I at least chose where the calories will go?" to which he replies "Sorry. Says here they are going straight to your thighs."

This is the part that irks me. I've notices that both ads and news articles are pushing the calories=fat, completely forgetting the part about calories/kilojoules being a measurement of energy (to heat 1g of water by 1 degree for a calorie). And that we should burn off everything we eat.

I just think they are misrepresenting the facts and perpetuating a dieting/calorie counting obsession.

Maybe I am overreacting?

I think this got raised a few months ago by an aussie group who partitioned to have it taken off the air. I don't watch normal TV (have foxtel) but am sad to see they didn't succeed.

My mouth dropped open when I read the part about "going straight to your thighs" . How dare they put that stuff on television where impressionable kids will see that? Or that ANYONE will see that? That's SCARY.

Demonising foods to promote their own... grr. And what sucks is the meal plan I am supposed to follow has 2-3 poppers of flavoured milk a day. I don't need that...

the advertising business is SO reckless and stupid. I HATE commercials like that. I am so glad I don't own a tv anymore

I hate to say this, but... that commercial would appeal to their target audience... and grant it you cannot control where calories land... I'm not any more shocked by that commercial than I am by others.

also, Ashley your post is quite insightful... I had never read that artificial sweetener study before and found it quite interesting... I actually just texted the link to one of my friends who is currently pursuing her doctorate at purdue.

What's the best diet you tried that yielded you the greatest results and didn't make you crazy? I need to lose some weight-- about 40-50 pounds. I am intelligent and know that decreasing caloric intake and increasing my activity level will do that, but its so hard to stick to a diet when everyone else in the family isn't dieting.

Diets don't work, my dear. If they did, you'd only have to do it once.

If you want to live a healthy lifestyle, maybe this forum can help. But we're certainly not here to encourage anyone to diet!

Hmm... I wonder if the makers of that commercial are aware that fat thighs may ward off heart disease and diabetes. Advertising FAIL

Epic advertising fail.

And delenda, I actually told a friend of mine what you said about diets as her parents want her to go on one. Now granted, this girl is a tad on the heavy side, but I think she's gorgeous, nonetheless. You'd be surprised at how few people on this planet understand how diets work. I think it is much easier to change your eating habits to eating everything in moderation with all the recommended vitamins your body needs (with a few treats on the side, mind you) rather than cutting out everything all together. It is also much more effective.

I agree wholeheartedly, Becky. Most people who go on diets gain the weight back because they don't learn how to eat properly, and then they just resort back to their old eating habits once they're done dieting.

Diets are a bunch of crap. You can't quit smoking cold-turkey. Well, you can't quit eating junk cold-turkey either! It won't last.
