I was watching TV this afternoon and during the commercial break, there was an ad for Weight Watchers. In the ad, hunger is personified as a fuzzy little orange monster who is always sneaking up on this overweight woman. I can't quite remember the details, but at the end, it shows this monster character being knocked off a kitchen counter, or something similar, and the narrator of the ad says, "Show hunger who's boss." Are you fucking kidding me? Shouldn't the message be more along the lines of "Listen to your hunger"? Seriously, I get it, the woman needs to lose weight. Fine. I'm ok with that. But shouldn't she be learning how to listen to when her body needs food and also how to stop when she knows she's satisfied her nutritional requirements? The goal is to get people to eat in order to nourish their bodies, and to stop emotional overeating. This ad sends a bad message to both overweight people and people struggling with undereating. Why should anyone, regardless of their weight, be encouraged to "show hunger who's boss"? This fucking pisses me off.

You can learn a bit more if you google "weight watchers + show hunger who's boss". I'm not sure if any variations on this ad are being run in countries other than Canada...
[And what a perfect coincidence that the hunger monster is orange!]

Anyway, I feel like complaining. I feel like biting back at Weight Fucking Watchers.

That commercial is in the US too. I'm with you on the hating Weight Watchers...my mom joined when I was in junior high and she even ended up becoming a meeting leader. I'm sure it's not a coincidence that that was about the time that I started acting on wanting to lose weight. It's not a big stretch going from "that's too many points" to "that's too many calories"

I also hate this time of year with everyone and their dog resolving to lose weight. It seems like that's all I see on TV and in magazines...ads for the latest diet and miracle ways to shed some pounds. Grrr.... :x

fuck weight watchers! grrrr!

when i was at OCU there was a girl who desperately wanted to be a dance major.. and they wouldnt take her at first. the only reason? her weight. she is not and was not ever overweight. but they told her this "get a personal trainer and go on weight watchers. drop 30 lbs and then you can audition again"

now she is way too focused on what/howmuch/when she eats.... and she is starting to get scary thin. and i miss the old girl i met freshman year..

I saw that commercial and the whole time I was like...this is unbelievable. It was like watching what goes on in my own head, which is NOT something people should be striving for!

I haven't seen this ad. I don't think we have it in Australia.

It didn't bother me.... but maybe my mind is still just too warped.
I don't know too much about weight watchers except that they have meetings similar to AA & their slogan is 'stop dieting, start living'
which I always thought was cool.
But they're not so cool after all?

Okay, now I get it.
They're saying defeat hunger, not your appetite.
There's nothing wrong with feeling hungry, we're supposed to feel hungry.
Alot of people have exessive appetites & that's what this program is for.
Then why can't they say beat you appetite?

I saw this commercial and I was really pissed off. Fight hunger? No, fight binge eating. This is so frustrating. Whenever commercials like this come on I mute the TV and cringe until it's over. Just like on MTV they have that show True life and a bunch of different scenarios and there are some that is True life; I'm obese, True life; i want the perfect body (1 & 2) and it's all just really triggering to me.

Tssk. Should be show BINGES who's boss. Show CRAVINGS who's boss.

Shame, really, that "Show POORLY CHOSEN AND EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY DESTRUCTIVE COPING MECHANISMS who's boss" isn't quite as catchy...
