I know that the fashion industry glorifies emaciation, but the drug industry?! This was on my myspace homepage as an advertisement, and I just about gagged when I saw this.

The jeans the girl is holding up are clearly a normal size pair of jeans, probably worn by someone of average weight. And it's advertised for 18-year-olds!

What is this world coming to...?

Ugh I know EXACTLY how you feel. Commercials, advertisments on facebook, magazines..it's all SO triggering for me. The media doesn't know whats healthy.

I know, and it's so sad. I feel like the media plays the key role in a lot of the developments of eating disorders nowadays. But, like everything else in the natural world, it will probably go through cycles. Perhaps there will be a turning point when the ideal woman is projected as naturally curvacious (no implants, fer gawd's sake), healthy, rosey-cheeked, and happy. For the sake of the generation of young women in this world, I hope that this or something similar will happen. When will I no longer have to see the sullen faced, sunken cheeked, thin armed woman of the advertisement world? I pine for a day without seeing her everytime I pass a billboard.

I believe that advertising perpetuates eating disorders.

Advertising is propaganda for corporations. There are no banner ads on this site whatsoever. I want this forum uncorrupted by advertising so that people can clear their heads in peace.

They are trying to convince you that you NEED something in order to be better. That strategy is going to involve also convincing you that you aren't okay just as you are.

So advertising will always be the enemy of you accepting yourself as you are. It will also need to convince you that you are NOT okay as you are so that they can sell you something that they convince you that you will NEED in order to be okay.

Welcome to the site, btw.

Advertisement in a certain sense, yes. The modern advertisement- absolutely.

I'm sure you've seen Dove's campaign featuring all shapes of women. I loved that! Perhaps instead of seeing advertisements in dichotomic thinking, there can be a distinguishable difference between healthy advertisements and ones that are detrimental to the psychological health of its audience.

Good idea of keeping this site free of that kind of nonsense, however. I did notice the lack of advertisements when I joined. Quite refreshing. :)

Grr, Raah and just NO!

I despise all "weightloss" adverts, especially the ones that focus on younger people like that..making them think that they should waste their youth in a persuit of an illusive perfect body...youth is for having fun and living life not calorie counting, weight loss patches/pills/"magiccures" and fad diets. It makes me so mad. It really does.

Perhaps because she's not and your brain is reasonable. Unlike advertising.

Are you 18? My facebook used to give me ads saying "21-YEAR-OLD FEMALE OVERWEIGHT?!"
it made me feel quite violated actually, since they were clearly using my own info against me. [this is before i got an adblocker!]

i find it devastating that these ads are out there though...

My MySpace has ones that take your personal info as well...for dating ads as well as weightloss...saying things like "27 and overweight? The perfect diet for you has been found!"
