I saw this ad on my facebook today.


I didn't necessarily want to give it a new post, but I couldn't find an existing one to add it to.


That said, what do we/should we do about it? Facebook always has diet ads on the sidebar. And I'm sure they're not the only one. There is a post in this section about google putting ads on sites based on keywords that may be completely inappropriate. Who is responsible for green lighting these things anyway?

Facebook has two kinds of ads. Beacon ads and social ads. The ones you saw are social ads.

If you install the adblock extension for Firefox, and you can block these social ads.

They all come from this URL:

You can also block the Beacon ads by blocking this URL:

I don't think Facebook objects to having such ads. It's an ad-supported site. Blocking the ads is the way to go. I don't see ads on facebook like that because I've done the above steps.

That ad above is offensive, though.

I block most of my ads too.



and although I can block those on my computer, there is one just like the picture above on a f**** billboard on my way home from work. That one is a little harder to block.

It's sensible to have an adblock on your computer, and block whatever ads you can.

honsitally, i am about the only one in the world who doesnt have facebook!:)
but it is becasue i am against it on persona levels. for other people, it is a healthy way of cumminication, but i think that things like, "honisty box" are just plain old ridiculous. i think it is another form/possible way to bully people. that being said, i also think if used the right way, it can be a fun pass-time

You're not the only one to start getting concerned about this targetting through things like myspace.. there was a news article the other day on the radio about the 'pink patch' diet which is mainly broadcasted through facebook- http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/health/newsid_7452000/7452145.stm

There are a gazillion of these on Facebook, I hate them so much! They bother the shit out of me, but also make me kind of glad that I'm at a point where I don't look at them and go "Oh man, I should check that out, maybe they know something I don't."

I've seen these too, and they actually really trigger me...

Wouldn't it suck for Facebook if masses of people started boycotting use of the site because of the ads? What if people started looking for social spaces that were NOT ad-supported, and patronized them instead?
