is it my hypersensitive imagination, or did i just see
a self-esteem manipulating add from Tylenol, of all things!?

it opened with an image of a bathroom scale needle pointed at the number one.
it revealed that
"losing one pounds of weight..."

[pause while the viewer evaluates how desperately s/he needs to lose a pound]

"can take four pounds

of pressure off your knees."

am i imagining that this is a little borderline?

"Tylenol Arthritis."

...and kinda unrelated?

(just as icing on the, er, cake, it happened that the following add was for a new kind of chocolate from Hershey's)

a blogger addresses the campaign quite wittily here: http://arrogantemu.monadology.net/2008/ ... -headache/

I don't see this as a negative thing and I agree with what Lizibitz said. This isn't a question of vanity, but health. Having some extra weight isn't a crime and if someone is happy with themself at a higher weight then by all means, but we can't forget that being overweight does come with possible health risks - just as being underweight does. And I believe it is very important that these risks are being addressed because not everyone realizes that their health problems could be fixed by dropping even a few extra pounds. High blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis... all of these can be alleviated and even prevented with weight loss/maintenance, but instead many people just take pills because "it's a disease and out of my control".

I'm afraid people are going from one extreme (insolence towards fat people) to being overly careful and nice, and tiptoeing around the subject. As a currently slightly overweight person myself I find it almost patronizing.

actually, you're right. you've made me think about it much more level-headedly. as you say, 'health' should be the message sent by our society, not 'it's okay to be irresponsible with your weight'.

still, i think the borderline sinister vibe from the ad isn't totally imagined...it seems to say that "you should lose weight, 'cause that's why your knees hurt. but you're fat, so take Tylenol instead."

ok, i realise that's a bit skewed. if you can, though, check out the blog link i posted above - she mentions some other ads i hadn's seen in the same campaign and articulates the issue better than i. i think she hits the nail on the head.
