Not strictly related to body image and EDs but I thought this is alarming. (There are a few more articles on the topics, see if I can digg them up later.)

Women writers on the Internet are victims of certain forms of abuse that go beyond what their male colleagues get, often threatened with rape, dismissed because they don't look good enough or not taken seriously because looking good is obviously all we're good for.

And to be honest, being afraid of this kind of attitude or being afraid of rejection and dismissal has at times made me afraid to say what I think.

Why do these guys hate women?
Do you think it's a strategy to frighten women into silence? Or what's behind this?

And for a bit of comic relief:

I'm not convinced that women are disrespected or threatened more than men on the internet. Perhaps we just feel more vulnerable?

I'm not certain either and so far the evidence is anecdotal - and I'd sure like to see some statistics.

And my point isn't really that it's the general criticism and vitriol and nastyness that comes so easy in the anonimity but rather a very, ummm -is sexualize a good word ? - kind of abuse.

However, some male journalists have stated that even though they, too, get their share of abuse, there's a certain brand they don't or only rarely get - like rape threats and such.

Also, I've come across some female bloggers who are regularly targeted in a way that male bloggers are not - even if they attract a lot of aggression it seems to focus less on their genereal ugliness, genitalia or their total f***-unworthyness, often combined by depictions of how the haters would do it anyway.

Yeah, I know, still only anecdotal evidence but I found this story particularly awful: (She also adresses the question whether she simply might need a thicker skin about which she thought a lot )
