It is a children's book on the subject of eating disorders.

I haven't read it, only the excerpt available here:

http://www.fmem.net/book_excerpt.htm

but the foreword and the rest of the site is worth a look. seems like really good work!!

thoughts?

the only thing clear to me as unfortunate are the gender stereotypes which might make it difficult for a child with the opposite inclinations.. but on the other hand, if both mice were one gender the other would be excluded. i suppose they could have added more mice but for simplicity, it works.

Wow I actually really like that. That's really well explained! I've never seen anything for children or even teenagers really that does a good job of explaining what an eating disorder is in a relateable way without either glamorising it or making it into something so sort of terrifying and extreme people can't relate it to their own experience.

I want that book! :D
Methinks it's great. As a child eating disorders were kind of mystery for me and the only thing that I knew about them was "getting skinny".So I thought "I'm not skinny,I don't have a problem".Bullsh*t ;) Everyone should be educated :P

Oh, it all sounds so sad (but I'm not gonna lie..the mice are adorable >.>)

It reminds me of a poem my bf wrote for me, about a girl that shrunk so small she could wonder about this tiny city. Was basically a fairytale version of things so far. x3

I love that something like that's been written though. :3

I think this is so great. Not only for just plain teaching kids about eating disorders, but it would be a really great way for someone struggling with ed to open up conversation with their children. The artwork is awesome and so is the way it's written.

I don't have kids, but I'm tempted to buy a copy!

It is on my list to buy. I want to check it out really badly. I'd be interested in reading it to kids too - both those with eating disorders and those without.

Bought the book a couple of weeks ago. Read it, loved it. Reviewed it here: http://tearstowords.blogspot.com/2011/06/full-mouse-empty-mouse-earns-my-respect.html

I saw that on EDAN and had wondered if it was on here that you'd heard about it <3

This is so, so beautiful.

I may not be a young child anymore, and yet I still appreciated it haha... :)

I liked it that the juxtaposed stories of Billy and Sally-Rose were seemingly in direct contrast to one another and yet both ended with the identical two lines ("the pain inside him/her grew and grew/but other mice, they never knew") – it removes some of the emphasis from the specific behaviours and signifies that what is important in an eating disorder is the presence of underlying negative feelings.

And the illustrations are so caauuuute!! Hehe. :-)
