Article about their latest campaign. Use caution if you go to the URL, their first display involves a very underweight woman.

http://www.canada.com/news/PETA+launch+porn+site+name+animal+rights/5424516/story.html

NEW YORK -- An animal rights group, which is no stranger to attention-grabbing campaigns featuring nude women, plans to launch a pornography website to raise awareness about veganism.

The nonprofit organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) whose controversial campaigns draw criticism from women's rights groups, said it hopes to publicize veganism through a mix of pornography and graphic footage of animal suffering.

"We're hoping to reach a whole new audience of people, some of whom will be shocked by graphic images that maybe they didn't anticipate seeing when they went to the PETA triple-X site," said Lindsay Rajt, PETA's associate director of campaigns.

PETA has been accused of campaigning for animal rights at the cost of exploiting women. A Facebook group, Real Women Against PETA, was launched after the organization paid for a billboard showing an obese woman with the message: "Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber. Go Vegetarian."

Another critical Facebook group is called, "Vegans (and Vegetarians) Against PETA."

"PETA is extremely disingenuous," said Jennifer Pozner, executive director of the New York-based advocacy group Women In Media & News. "They have consistently used active sexism as their marketing strategy to garner attention. Their use of sexism has gotten more extreme and more degrading.

"This may be in their minds the only thing left at their disposal to lower the bar," she said.

PETA has filed paperwork to launch its pornography site when the controversial new .xxx domain becomes active in early December. While many nonprofits and corporations are scrambling to protect their website names from being hijacked by a pornographer slapping on a .xxx domain, PETA is embracing the new domain as just another way to conduct business.

"We try to use every outlet that we can to speak up for animals," Rajt said. "We anticipated that this new triple-X domain name would be a hot topic and we immediately decided to use it and take advantage of it to try to promote the animal rights message."

Jill Dolan, director of the program in gender and sexuality studies at Princeton University, was critical of the PETA campaigns.

"Exploiting porn to get people's juices going seems lame; exploiting pornographic images only of women to make their point is retrograde and misogynist," Dolan said in an email. "Come on, PETA. Don't be Neanderthals."

Rajt denied that PETA has been insensitive to women.

"Our demonstrators, the models, all chose to participate in our campaigns . . . It's not a very feminist thing to do to turn to women and tell them whether or not they can use their voices, their bodies to express their voice."

Visitors to the X-rated site will initially be presented with pornographic content as well as images from PETA's salacious ads and campaigns, Rajt said. Those images will be followed by pictures and video shot undercover of the mistreatment of animals. The site will also include links to vegetarian and vegan — using no animal products — starter kits as well as recipes.

PETA's ad campaigns have featured adult film stars Sasha Grey, Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson. In 2008, the organization's YouTube account was temporarily shut down after showing racy videos of celebrities and others posing nude.

"When people first visit the site, it will be very enticing and once they go just a little bit deeper, that's when they'll be confronted with images that we hope will make them stop and think and get them talking and hopefully encourage them to make a lifestyle change to a plant-based diet," Rajt said.

I won't click on the link, I really hate porn in general. I'm sorry but there are better ways to raise awareness than shock value. Ugh.

I'm a vegetarian and things like this make me dislike PETA quite a lot.

I think that it's better to try and change people's minds through compassion, understanding and just making the option of vegetarianism/veganism available. I like sites that offer vegetarian recipes and advice, and maybe run campaigns to show how healthy and easy that lifestyle can be.

PETA prefer to rip through your shower curtain with a pick-axe and scream that your shower gel once made a gerbil sneeze.

Very interesting, very offensive, and very stupid, I think. But PETA has been pissing me off for years. [as a vegetarian and former vegan.]

just so you know, the link is just to the news article, not the actual website (which hasn't been released).

Yes, but it does have photos of a fairly revealing nude woman as well as what appears to be a butchered man.

Ummmm, porn with random clips of animals being butchered? Sounds like a good way to flag uhhh.. certain "personality" profiles?

Errrm...the whole thing is just gross.

That is why I'm a proud member of PETA: People eating tasty animals! (I hope this doesn't offend my veggie/vegan friends, but I really don't like PETA's approaches at all.)

Sigh. They say they're hoping to reach a whole new branch of people...who will be shocked when they see the animal suffering. Well, yeah...some poor sod is looking up pictures of naked ladies or whatever, and instead they see pictures of animal suffering.
I don't like the charity at all, but I think they're doing the wrong thing here for their own sakes...I mean if someone's looking up porn and finds a picture of animals suffering, they aren't going to go "Oh, look at that- I shall join PETA right away", they're gonna say "Get lost, I wanted boobies" or words to that effect...
Maybe I'm missing the point here, but I really think that if they wanted to make an impact, they should have tried a different idea...this one's really scraping the barrel and it won't even work, because if people are looking up pornography, that's what they'll want to see, and they're more likely to click off the page onto something else than pay attention to some poor animal...

It's definitely a step up from that other campaign a few years ago when they showed pictures of holocaust victims next to caged animals, but that's the best I can say about it.

I agree with Jacqui that it's unlikely they are going to attract many new followers via google search for porn.
Dont' get me wrong: I lived as a veggie for a few years (till I decided what with my other issues I couldn't keep it up) and I do have a lot of respect for vegetarians.
Denouncing animal suffering is a good cause - and the conditions under which most animals are kept are outrageous.
But sometimes I get the impression that the main accomplishment of those PETA folks is not denouncing factory farming as immoral, but denouncing themselves as whacky.

EDIT: To be a bit more precise: It should have gone without saying that I have respect for vegetarians (given that they are, you know, people). What I meant was that I do have respect for their lifestyle and ethical convictions.

I totally agree with you Ashley.
It seems they hold the rights of animals far above the women that they have turned into sexual objects, stripped nude denouncing the use of animals for food and clothing.

The porn site really is a step too far...

I've been a vegetarian for years and I've disliked PETA for almost as long. They just fuel a "radical hippie" stereotype. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd turned more people away from vegetarianism.
