I've only just been made aware of this on Facebook, but they still seem to be selling this as a fancy dress costume

http://www.joke.co.uk/fancy_dress/adult ... 30188.html

I find this detrimental to people with eating disorders, their friends and family, and those who strive to treat them

Hmm.

I once wore about fifty different "Hello, my name is... _____" stickers with different names on them and went as someone with multiple personalities. I found the feedback from other people to be a trip and a half. I will say this - whoever wore such a costume would bare the brunt of whatever commentary people around them felt blunt enough to provide.

If you saw someone wearing a costume like this, would you approach them about it and talk about it, or just blog about it later?

Maybe a part of Halloween we never really talk about is how other people interact with us while we are in costume... like testing out a new identity even if it's just a joke. Sometimes people wear a joke costume because it's so far from their reality it's funny. Sometimes they wear a joke costume because it's so on point - so close to home - it's not even funny. Either way, they'd get feedback from other people around them. The sort of feedback they get - good or bad ("hahah funny anorexic costume" or "anorexia? fucked up!") and whether nor not they even care...

But what do I know? I'm just blogging.

OK, I'm sorry, I wasn't here at the time. I still find it disgusting. And I'm sorry for that...

...And it also might help in my argument in saying that where I live, Halloween is about witches, ghosts, etc. Nothing to do with clever costumes and making points. It's just about dressing up as a witch or ghost or zombie. We don't do a just fancy dress thing, it has to be a scary costume
That's how I've been brought up...

I really dislike it........ I saw it last year and I really feel like it glorifies anorexia and sexualizes it (surprise, surprise, we do live in a culture of everything having to center around sex appeal). I feel like it discounts the struggles. I wouldn't have a problem if it were bringing awareness, but it isn't. It definitely does NOT depict that it is hell, it depicts it as sexy. And since when is anorexia sexy?????

Just my two cents.. :)

I think far worse things happening out there in regards to e.d.'s yet this costume is getting a lot of focus - tons of articles were written about it when it came out

I can see how this could upset people... yes.
And I do apologize if I offend anyone for saying this...
But I can also see a funny side to this.
It actually does amuse me.

I don't like it. I believe personification of any ED, especially as something cute, sexy, etc is giving ED kind attention they don't deserve. And I find it disturbing that someone wants to make money using anorexia that way.

We have to remember there's a difference between people with anorexia & people who do not have anorexia presenting a parody like this.
Although I think they could have done a better job with the costume itself (too pretty, as we know anorexia is not pretty), I tend to be able to laugh at my ED at times & it's actually a victory over the ED to be able to poke fun at it. I think if someone showed up at an ABA Halloween party in this we'd all laugh ourselves silly, but we as EDed people have a right to you know?

But as for non-EDed people wearing this that have no concept of what an eating disorder is I would find it totally offensive. I mean, you don't mock what you don't understand. For example, I don't have a large understanding of gambling addiction, so I'd never make fun of those who do. What right do I have to?
