Welcome to WBB. Whether you are a new member or an existing member, you are going to start scrolling through and realise that you can't find those old dogs called "anorexia", bulimia", "binge eating disorder", or any of their DSM-V based (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - V) friends under the ED Discussions forum, there are no ED subforums for anorexia, bulimia, EDNOS or compulsive overeating.

What the heck is an ED site doing without "recognised" eating disorders in it?

We have kicked the DSM's arbitrary diagnostic distinctions between eating disorders to the curb. Not only do people often move between EDs at different points in their struggles and recovery, very often a person diagnosed with one "official" ED will manifest behaviours of another and so not know where best to post a question. Another problem with these arbitrary distinctions (which are really heavily funded and influenced by insurance and pharmaceutical industries to decrease costs and increase profits) is that there is often a "hierarchy" of eating disorders, and anorexia is seen - wrongly - as "queen". So sometimes members feel embarassed about or reluctant to post under one of the non-anorexia sections because they feel like it is a reflection on them or how "sick" they are (or are not).

We know that is bollocks (a word that originally meant "testicles" I am now to learn) and that your diagnosis has NO bearing on your emotional pain or physical health or how physically sick or compromised you are: people with eating disorders can die at any size and some research suggests that more than half of ED-related deaths occur in people who are average or overweight.

And the final reason we are doing away with the DSM (just in case you needed more) is that many of us share the same emotional pain, thought patterns, self-perceptions and dysfunctional behaviours no matter what our diagnosis.

This is a recovery site. It is a place to come to when you are looking for support, to challenge yourself to think about some of the recovery questions and exercises/challenges and to learn about things that can support your recovery efforts. This is a safe place to journal about how you are feeling and what you are going through. That will not change.

Instead, our ED Discussions forum is based on eating disorder patterns and behaviours. We have created a number of subforums, including Reproductive Health, Purging, Restriction, Bingeing and Chewing and Spitting. Populated by some new threads, some old threads and some threads from other forums, we also have a basic general Eating Disorders subforum which contains information common across all EDs.

Our new configuration gives you better access to current information on the things we all need to know and remember as we walk (or run, or occasionally stumble) our paths to living the lives we deserve to live - also known as "recovery".

Any questions? Ask here, or pm anyone whose name with a coloured name (thus a mod or admin), or if it is an ED question, post it in the new Eating Disorders subforum.

Whispered words of wisdom,
Let it be.
